At present, when the incidence of glaucoma is higher than ever, it is especially important to develop new effective drugs to treat it.
Taflotan is one of the newest drugs for the control of local glaucoma.
Tafluprost( the active substance of the drug), being a synthetic analogue of a special substance, prostaglandin F2-alpha, promotes the outflow of intraocular fluid and a decrease in pressure.
This drug was Taflotan, the advantage of which is its higher affinity and selectivity to prostaglandin receptors than other drugs in this group.
This causes a smaller number of unwanted reactions and a rare manifestation of them, in particular, this concerns eye irritation and eyelid hyperemia.
Taflotan belongs to the drugs of the second line of pharmacotherapy, which means lowering the intraocular pressure by 20%( first-line drugs lower it by 30%).For this reason, the scheme of application of this medication is slightly different from that of first-line drugs and it is not prescribed at the beginning of treatment.

Instructions for use
Pharmacodynamics
Active metabolite of tafluprost( formed under the action of hydrolytic enzymes tafluprostovaya acid) selectively binds to prostanoid FP receptors, which leads to the discharge of the matrix of the ciliary muscle and increased uveoscleral outflow of the intraocular fluid.
As a result, there is a persistent therapeutic effect, reaching a maximum after 12 hours and expressed in a decrease in fluid pressure within the eyes during the day. The drug begins to act 2 hours after instillation.
When applied
Taflotan has two main indications: open-angle glaucoma and ophthalmic hypertension.
It is prescribed in the form of monotherapy with insufficient effectiveness of first-line drugs or their intolerance to the patient.
If necessary, taplothane can also be used in combination with beta-blockers.
Form
Taflotan is an eye drop. The solution is dispensed in a tube of droppers with a volume of 0.3 ml. In the package there are 3 tapes, in each - 10 special tubes-droppers.
The active ingredient is tafluprost. As a necessary auxiliary components, the solution also contains glycerol, polysorbate 80, sodium edetate, sodium hydrophosphate. To adjust the pH, sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid is added.
Taflotan is dispensed by prescription and self-medication is unacceptable.
How to use
The instillation is carried out as follows: in a conjunctival bag of a diseased eye, drop 1 drop per day, in the evening. It is not recommended to use Taflotan more than once a day, since the effect of increasing intraocular pressure is possible.
After instillation it is recommended to close the eyelids tightly or gently push the inner corner of the eye to reduce the likelihood of systemic absorption of the drug. To avoid darkening of the skin, remove the excess solution that has fallen on it.
If contact lenses are used by the patient, they should be worn no earlier than 15 minutes after instillation. This is due to the fact that the components of the drug can damage the surface of the lens.
In 1 tube-dropper contains the volume of solution necessary for a single instillation in two eyes. After opening and use for the intended purpose, the tube-dropper should be disposed of together with the remaining solution.
Its improper storage in the opened packaging will certainly lead to microbial contamination and subsequent infection of the mucous eye.
Drug Interactions
No studies have been conducted for the interaction of Taflotan with drugs from other groups, since its concentration in the total blood stream after use according to the instructions is negligible. If the drug is assigned in conjunction with any other drops, then use them with a break, the duration of not less than 5 minutes .
Side effects of
There are no systemic adverse reactions in Taflotan( it is practically not absorbed into the blood).Only in rare cases can there be headache, fatigue. Influence on the cardiovascular system is also absent.
The most common side effects are local manifestations:
- Redness of the eyes.
- Sense of irritation, dry eyes, itching.
- Darkening of eyelids and eye color, thickening of eyelashes and increase in their number.
- Allergic conjunctivitis.
- Edema of the eyelids.
Special instructions
Before starting treatment, patients are always warned about possible darkening of the skin of the eyelids and changes in the color of the iris. This is especially important when instilled in one eye( persistent heterochromia develops). This side effect is more common in people with a mixed color of the iris( gray-green, green-brown) and appears for several months or even years.
Pigmentation increases around the pupil and expands to the periphery of the eye, resulting in the iris becoming brown.
With such pathologies as a closed-angle, congenital, narrow-angle, neovascular glaucoma, Taflotan is not used because of a lack of clinical experience. Also, the preparation should be used cautiously in case of damage to the posterior lens chamber, lens implantation, aphakia, artifactia. In such patients, the risk of developing macular edema is increased.
Because of the preservatives that make up the drug, people who are prone to dry eyes should be taken by the doctor under constant supervision.
The drug has absolutely no effect on the ability to drive vehicles, but do it immediately after instillation should not be, because some blurred vision is possible. This recommendation applies to working with mechanical equipment.
Contraindications
The drug can not be taken with individual intolerance to its components, and also in childhood ( under 18 years) .With care, Taflotan is prescribed for patients with bronchial asthma.
Overdose of
An overdose of the drug, if it is used according to instructions, is not possible. If the solution is accidentally ingested, the treatment is symptomatic. In dose adjustment for the elderly there is no need.
Use in pregnancy or lactation
Taflotan is contraindicated in pregnant women, because it is not excluded its negative impact on both the course of pregnancy and the child. During the lactation period, the drug can not be used.
Moreover, Taflotan is not recommended for women of reproductive age if they do not use sufficiently effective means of protection from pregnancy.
How to store the
Storage conditions are:
temperature 2 to 8 ° C | |
Shelf life | |
Shelf life after opening | should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C for up to 4 weeks |
Special instructions:exclude children's access to the drug. Do not use if the expiration date has expired.
How much does
Styrenic analogues of prostaglandins are more expensive for the treatment of glaucoma than drugs from other pharmacological groups. The average price of Taflotan in Russia is about 850 rubles. , and in pharmacies in Ukraine - about 215 UAH .
Analogues
Currently, the preparations of the Taflotan group are positioned as the most effective and safe means for the treatment of glaucoma. Among them are:
- Xalatan. According to the hypotensive activity, it is not inferior to that of Taflotan, but its effect is distinguished by a special uniformity, which excludes jumps of intraocular pressure.
- Travatane. Has the highest hypotensive activity among known analogues of prostaglandins. In this case, it is characterized by a more frequent occurrence of side effects.
According to clinical studies, among all the analogues of prostaglandins, Taflotan is the safest drug.
In addition to the group of drugs under consideration, glaucoma can also be prescribed beta-blockers, such as Arutimol. He, like Taflotan, improves the outflow of intraocular fluid.
Maximum effect Arutimol reaches after 2 hours and stores it also within 24 hours. However, it is more actively absorbed into the bloodstream and can cause a number of systemic side effects.
At the initial stage of the appearance of glaucoma, the above preparations help to maintain and restore health in the following parts of the eye:
Glaucoma can not be treated alone. The appointment of the necessary drug is performed by the doctor, based on the patient's examination data. If there is a need to change the drug, then you need to do this as recommended by the doctor.
Reviews
Among the reviews on the drug, there are no those in which it would be dissatisfied with the effectiveness of treatment. Taflotan really helps to cope with glaucoma: it acts quickly, significantly reducing intraocular pressure.
However, people often note the high cost of Taflotan, and also express concern about side effects. Often complain of a headache in the morning. Avoid this, if you take the drug not at night, but for 5-8 hours before bedtime. Also, irritation of the conjunctiva, a sensation of "sand in the eyes" is often described.
Special attention should be paid to the occurrence of side effects, not described in the instructions, but leading to the withdrawal of the drug. These include heart palpitations and shortness of breath in the elderly. This allows us to question the claimed safety manufacturer.
