Anti-Inflammatory Eye Drops Dexamethasone

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid drug that has an anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect.

This drug is prescribed for chronic and acute inflammation of the eyes, for the treatment and prevention of inflammation after operations and eye injuries, in allergic diseases.

Useful properties

Preparation Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid. A sufficiently pronounced and rapid anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect develops during 4-8 hours after instillation of the drug in the eye.

Dexamethasonefights the inflammatory processes developing in the eye tissues as a result of an allergic reaction, mechanical trauma or chemical attack.

The drug very easily penetrates the conjunctiva and the epithelium of the cornea, and the penetration rate of the active substance increases with inflammation or damage to the mucous membrane. The drug penetrates into the systemic bloodstream in small amounts and, metabolized in the liver, is excreted through the intestine. Dexamethasone eye drops are used for chronic and acute inflammatory processes of the eyes, such as non-purulent forms of blepharitis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, as well as in iritis, iridocyclitis, scleritis, episcleritis, inflammations of the choroid, inflammations of the posterior segment of the eye,sympathetic ophthalmia.

The agent is effective for superficial corneal damage caused by physical, chemical, immune mechanisms, with its full epithelization, in the postoperative period.

Usage and dosage

The drug is instilled 3 to 5 times a day, 1-2 drops per conjunctival sac. The duration of treatment is no longer than three weeks. Treatment can be continued by the doctor's decision, based on data on the effectiveness of the drug, the severity of symptoms, the risk of side effects.

Contraindications

Dexamethasone is not recommended for use in varicella, keratitis caused by the herpes simplex virus, as well as in other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, with fungal diseases and microbacterial eye infections.

The drug is contraindicated in acute purulent diseases of the organ of vision, accompanied by the defeat of the corneal epithelium, with increased intraocular pressure, individual intolerance to any component of the drops.

No clinical trials have been conducted to treat pregnant and lactating women and children with this drug. In pregnancy, dexamethasone can be used only when the expected effect of treatment for the mother exceeds the potential risk for the child.

Side effects of

Immediately after instillation of the preparation, a slight burning sensation may occur, which occurs almost immediately.

Prolonged use of Dexamethasone may provoke the development of steroid cataracts or secondary glaucoma. Therefore, when instillation of funds for more than two weeks, as well as glaucoma in a history, it is necessary to regularly monitor the intraocular pressure.

Overdose

In the local use of eye drops, the development of an overdose is unlikely.

Interaction with other medications

Dexamethasone enhances the action of phenytoin, warfarin, barbiturates.

The drug reduces the effectiveness of quinidine, erythromycin, calcium channel blockers, such as cordipine, amlodipine, nifedipine, verapamil, cinnarizine, corinfar, etc.

The drug must be dispensed by prescription.

During treatment with this agent, the condition of the cornea and intraocular pressure should be monitored 10 days after the start of use.

Drops should not be used when wearing contact lenses. Before digestion of Dexamethasone, it is necessary to remove the lenses and put on again not earlier than in 20 minutes.

Treatment with corticosteroids can hide the current bacterial or fungal infection, so when an infection occurs, treatment with eye drops should be performed.
