Wine lovers will not be thrilled with a new study by scientists who have found that wine can lead to the loss of dental fillings. Even a couple of glasses a week leads to a sufficient violation of the stability of the fillings, both old and modern. This effect is especially noticeable in men.
Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh have found that in comparison with absolute teetotalers, people who consume alcoholic beverages in moderation are more likely to part with dental fillings within two years of their installation. It does not matter what kind of filling material was used. The highest losses were recorded among the male part of the subjects who, in addition to wine, had cigarettes in their "diet". The study emphasized that if people have a specific enzyme in their teeth, then dental their fillings fall out even more often, because against the background of the work of a certain gene, the coupling between the tooth and the filling is violated.
According to dentists, many problems, including further tooth decay, can be the cause of a tooth filling to fall out.
The use of low-quality materials by the doctor cannot be ruled out, because of which the filling is disconnected too early. Until recently, there was no consensus among dentists on which material should be considered the most reliable for fillings. It is believed that new dental fillings, which are made of composite material, are less durable than traditional amalgam fillings, which have been in place for a century and a half.
However, old fillings contain mercury, which is classified as a toxic metal. The researchers decided to analyze the reasons for the loss of a large number of fillings in the period up to five years after installation.
The results showed that composite materials were less reliable than amalgams, but their toxicity was lower. At the same time, a number of lifestyle factors and the genetics of patients were much more important in terms of their influence on the likelihood of dental fillings falling out. This risk increased if there was an effect of a certain gene, which increases the activity enzyme matrix metalloproteinase, as well as against the background of drinking alcoholic beverages, even in moderate quantity.
