Gates Glidden reamers, Largo drills: used in dentistry

Gates GliddenDental drills or reamers are used to widen the root canal orifices at the initial stage of treatment pulpitis, periodontitis and other diseases requiring removal tooth pulp.

There are 6 different types of reamers.

Each of them differs in the diameter of the drilling part:

  • 1 - 0.5 mm;
  • 2 - 0.7 mm;
  • 3 - 0.9 mm;
  • 4 - 1.1 mm;
  • 5 - 1.3 mm;
  • 6 - 1.5 mm.

For convenience, each of the species has visual identification - there are marks on the tail, the number of which corresponds to the number of the tool.

The length of the tools has 2 standard modifications - 2.8 cm (for processing molars and premolars) and 3.2 cm (for passing incisors and fangs).

Main manufacturers

Gates Glidden tools have a tail (insert into drill) and a rotary drill. The working zone is made in the form of a drop with 3 spiral cutting edges, its length is 2.5-3 mm. The drill is made of a stainless steel alloy containing chromium and nickel.

Gates Glidden are used:

  1. For mechanical expansion of the first third (orifice) of the root canal. The blunt tip of the working part eliminates

    perforation tooth, provides high-quality access for further work.
  2. For unsealing and removing fragments gutta-percha from a previously treated canal.

Endodrill Largo has a similar structure, but the length of its working part is 7-8 mm. Has 2 cutting blades in the form of a spiral.

Largo is used:

  1. At the initial stage of the passage of the canals of the incisors and canines.
  2. With prosthetics stump tabs for the formation of the mouth bed.

Comparative analysis

Gates Glidden are sold in a set of 6 sizes, or 6 pieces of each size. Recommended for use with a contra-angle handpiece (optimum rotation speed 800 rpm). They make it possible to form the mouth of the canal in the form of a funnel, which is convenient for further processing.

Largo are also used with a micromotor. Their design allows you to avoid breaking the tool along the bottom and jamming it at the root (in case of improper operation, the shank breaks off, and the working part is easily removed from the channel).

A spiral conical reamer is used to rebuild a dental stump using a fiberglass post. The length of the drilling part is 18.5-19 mm, the diameter has 4 different markings (1, 2, 3, 4), from the smallest to the largest. The size of the end-scan is selected for each tooth individually (molars and premolars - 1 and 2, canines and incisors - 3 and 4).

Parmax Classic reamer - used for prosthetics with a metal post. Has 6 modifications of diameter and 2 lengths (0.28 and 0.32 cm). The cutting edges are straight, not in a spiral like other similar tools.

Below is a table comparing different types of sweeps:

Manufacturer Positive sides Negative sides Price
Gates glidden Versatile, convenient to expand narrow tubules Difficulty shaping the pins 500-700 p. - 6 pcs.
Largo Universal, allow expanding the canals of incisors and canines, used for prosthetics Cannot be used in molars and premolars due to the risk of root perforation 550-750 p. - 6 pcs.
Twist conical drill Convenient when working with fiberglass pins Not suitable for other treatments (unsealing) 300 p. (assorted 4 sizes)
Parmax Classic Provide high quality work, exclude root fracture Can only be used for metal pins Parmax GT or PT, not suitable for other types of work 250-300 p. (whole set)

Each of the tools has both pros and cons, therefore, the drill must be selected individually for each case. It is obligatory to have several types and modifications of reamers in the dental office.
