Fixed dentures need to be reworked every 5-7 years. When they are firmly fixed, it can be difficult to remove them from the oral cavity; in such cases, the help of specialized devices is required - dental crown removers and bridge removers.
A fixed denture remover is a device that helps remove dental crown or bridge without compromising the integrity of dental tissues. It helps to mechanically separate the cement from dentin, after which the prosthesis is easily removed by hand.
The crown remover is made of medical stainless steel and can be easily disinfected and sterilized by any available method (autoclaving, processing in a dry heat cabinet).

Varieties of devices used
There are two fundamentally different versions of manual crown removers:
- As forceps. It has 2 handles, a lock and crossed cheeks. This device is used to remove pre-cut single stamped crowns. The principle of its operation lies in the mechanical action of the working parts on the walls of the prosthesis. As a result, the crown is deformed, while the tooth tissues remain intact.
- As hook. It has a handle, trigger and removable nozzles. Each of them has a hook of a different shape (for different groups of teeth). There is a spring inside the tool, which is connected to a conductor. The latter is in contact with the nozzle. During the removal of the crown, the hook clings to the edge of the crown, the doctor presses the lever, and the mechanism is activated, pulling the prosthesis from the tooth.
Depending on the type of work, a specific tool modification is selected.
Below are the most common dental instruments in this category:
- Hand forceps for removing crowns - made of chromium-nickel alloy, have 3 modifications of different sizes. Cost from 2500 to 3300 r.
- Copp apparatus - 3 hooks of different shapes are attached, the trigger has 6 degrees of strength. The nozzles are removable, they are connected to the adapter by means of a thread. Cost from 2000 to 2500 rubles.
- Set for removing bridges and crowns (Anthogyr, France) - consists of a box, holder, adapter and 4 attachments. The crown remover is connected to the contra-angle handpiece drills, use it with one hand. Convenient to use. Price - 23000-25000 r.
- Beater CoronaFlex 2005 (Kavo, Germany) - it is used when it is necessary to remove crowns with the application of minimal force (temporary structures, initial stage gingivitis). The set includes a device and removable loops that are held under the edge of the prosthesis. Periodontal disease is a contraindication for use. The price of the instrument is from 80,000 to 83,000 rubles.

How to use the crown remover
To remove a fixed prosthesis from the oral cavity without damaging the surrounding tissues, you must adhere to the following rules.
Using forceps
- It is necessary to carefully saw the crown with a fissure diamond bur along the equator, starting from the neck and ending with the occlusal surface. The resulting furrow should be in a vertical direction, not touching dentine.
- Insert the cheeks into the resulting gap in a closed state.
- Smoothly but confidently press the handles of the forceps. The working parts will stretch to the sides, pushing the walls of the crown apart.
- When the edges of the prosthesis are completely separated, carefully remove the prosthesis with your hands.
Using the hook stripper
If a metal-ceramic bridge is installed in the mouth, a hook-shaped crown remover must be used:
- Choose the necessary tip in accordance with the tooth, fix it in the guide wire.
- Fix the hook at the edge of the crown.
- Pull the trigger while pulling the prosthesis.
- If the bridge is attached to several teeth, repeat the procedure on each.
Usually, the patient does not experience pain during the application of the remover. In some cases, when removing the bridge, it is necessary to carry out application or infiltration anesthesia.
