Toothpaste is a familiar element of everyday life, it helps to keep the oral cavity clean, preventing the development of pathogenic microflora. And there are also medicinal, specialized and whitening means for cleaning teeth. The latter are more often referred to as abrasive.
What is the abrasiveness of toothpaste?
Tooth whitening abrasive paste contains a number of special components:
- particles that polish the surface;
- abrasive substances;
- substances that inhibit the formation of dental plaque;
- enzymes that soften plaque.
Each of them performs its function, saving a person from dental calculus and whitening enamel.
The first to work are abrasive substances, that is, microparticles with increased strength, which are added to the funds in the form of a fine powder:
- aluminum hydroxide;
- tricalcium phosphate;
- silicon dioxide;
- chemically precipitated chalk (Calcium carbonate);
- sodium metaphosphate (Sodium phosphate);
- Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate
- aluminum silicate (Aluminum silicate) and others.
Their principle of operation is based on mechanical removal of foreign elements from the surface of the teeth. When a person moves a toothbrush over their teeth, they move these particles, which enhance the cleaning process.
Polishing particles also have a hard base, but finer, they grind the surface. Enzymes and substances that limit the formation of tartar work as chemical reagents that break down salts and prevent them from settling on the enamel. All together allows you to achieve teeth whitening.
However, the abrasives in toothpaste can damage your teeth. Not only foreign substances are exposed to mechanical stress, but also the enamel of the teeth - it is exactly the same the same is erased under the influence of abrasives, like plaque, which leads to the appearance of cracks and its thinning.
Therefore, products with abrasive particles are supposed to be used not constantly, but periodically, so as not to cause great harm to the teeth.
In no case should they be used:
- children under 12 years old;
- people with excessive tooth sensitivity;
- owners increased enamel abrasion;
- in the presence of carious processes and problems with the gums.
RDA indices and types of toothbrushes recommended for use
The frequency of application of abrasive paste depends on its Bond Abrasiveness Index or RDA.
It is expressed in numbers and is written on the packaging of the product:
- An index of up to 50 says that the toothpaste is non-abrasive and suitable for everyday use, including people with increased sensitivity to enamel or sore gums.
- From 50 to 80 - a low abrasive agent for occasional fairly frequent use.
- 80 to 100 A medium abrasive product with good whitening properties is applied 3 to 5 times a month.
- More than 100 is a highly abrasive product used for teeth whitening. It should be prescribed by a dentist and should not be used for a long time.
The higher the index, the softer you need to apply toothbrushas the bristles add pressure and enhance the impact. Too hard bristles can injure gums and teeth.
Review of the best pastes on the domestic market depending on the index
You can buy abrasive paste not only at the pharmacy, but also in most stores. They are realized freely, even if the content of abrasive components is very high. However, the effectiveness of these funds is not always sufficient, and some "whitening" products are completely unfairly named.
Consider the most popular and high-quality products on the domestic market.
Let's start with the usual ones with an index less than 50 - they are suitable for children and for daily use:
- The list of products without abrasive substances should start with the Spanish brand Yotuel, which has an index of 36-40 units. It can be used daily. The tool helps prevent development caries and eliminate symptoms gingivitis and some other diseases.
- Italian remedy BlanX Med Pure Nature with an index of 40 contains herbal extracts that have a therapeutic effect, does not include fluoride, parabens and antiseptics.
- Curaprox Enzycal 950, produced in Switzerland, contains almost no abrasive substances, its index is only 30.
Among the products containing abrasive products in small or acceptable quantities, the Russian R.O.C.S. and Splat:
- R.O.C.S. Bionics based on herbal extracts: licorice root, thyme leaves and kelp. Does not contain fluoride and parabens, has a slight healing effect, relieving gum inflammation. The RDA is just above 50.
- The R.O.C.S. line fluoride-free (Maximum freshness, Caribbean summer, Citrus jazz, Morning energy, Taste of pleasure, Forest noon) - contain enzymes that help break down plaque and prevent plaque, anyone can use day. RDA not higher than 80.
- Russian brand Splat, produced in several forms: Biocalcium, Ultracomplex, Maximum, Aromatherapy, Green Tea, Magnolia. Includes both abrasive particles and enzymes for cleaving plaque, herbal extracts. Due to the addition of aromatic oils, it can have different aromas, showing anti-inflammatory properties. RDA not higher than 75.
Imported funds:
- Italian President Unique with RDA 75, containing xylitol and calcium glycerophosphate. Prevents the formation of plaque, but does not whiten the enamel.
- BioRepair Total Protection Plus also from an Italian manufacturer has a similar composition, with the inclusion of zinc-substituted hydroxyapatite, which strengthens the enamel. RDA 60.
- Paradontax without fluoride. RDA 60. Does not contain fluoride, parabens, antiseptics. It is herbal based and contains high amounts of sodium bicarbonate.
- Silca arctic white from a German manufacturer, its index is 85, which is enough for mild cleansing from coffee deposits or the effects of smoking. The main active ingredients in it: titanium and silicon oxides, hydrated silicon oxide (VI). The composition includes fluoride, which strengthens the enamel of the teeth.
Most of the highly abrasive toothpastes are familiar to many and are regularly advertised on television, although the commercials rarely talk about the rules for using such drugs. You can read about this only in the instructions for the paste or learn from the dentist. Highly abrasive products are not suitable for daily cleaning of teeth, as they can completely destroy them.
The list of such funds includes:
- Lacalut white with an index of 120, based on: fluorides, pyrophosphates and rounded abrasives. They break down plaque and remove it from the enamel surface, and fluoride helps to eliminate the consequences of aggressive exposure. However, the action of fluoride is not enough, therefore Lacalut White is used no more than once every 3-4 days.
- Russian brand R.O.C.S. Sensation Whitening with an index of 150 is also a grinding paste. Silicon oxide (VI), included in it, removes plaque, bromelain eliminates enamel discoloration, and calcium glycerophosphate strengthens tooth enamel.
- President White plus whitening toothpaste has an RDA of 200 units, it helps to get rid of even strong "dirt" on the teeth. Calcium microparticles are used in it as cleansing particles; the extract of Icelandic Cetraria helps to remove pigmentation. The minerals of sea shells help to make the tooth enamel stronger. Due to the very active action of President White plus, it is allowed to use no more than 1 time 7-10 days.
The use of whitening agents often occurs uncontrollably, as a result of which a person who has purchased toothpaste at a high price may soon notice a deterioration in the condition of the teeth. It will be difficult to correct this error, so it is worth consulting your dentist before using a product with a high RDA index.
