Causes

The formation of edema after dental implantation is a normal reaction of the body to a violation of the integrity of tissues. After the operation, blood and lymph begins to flow intensively to the gum area, which causes swelling. It is localized at the site of the operation and around implant, while the gums swell, cheek, lip, depending on which tooth was replaced.

Each patient has an individual reaction to an implanted foreign body in the basal bone, and the size of the swelling can be minimal with a slightly swollen cheek or severe with swelling on half of the face. The size will also depend on the number of implants installed.

How long does the swelling last

The edema builds up within 2-4 days after implantation, after which it begins to gradually disappear in 5-7 days.

This "rise and fall" process is an indicator of the normal response of the immune system. If after 3-4 days the puffiness does not go away, other symptoms intensify or add - temperature, bleeding, severe pain - you should contact your dentist to find out the reasons.

How to relieve swelling

After dental implantation, it is very important to follow several rules and recommendations of the dentist-prosthetist:

  1. Apply ice to the place of edema, preferably wrapped in a scarf or towel.
  2. Rinse with strained chamomile broth, sage, oak bark - they relieve inflammation and reduce swelling.
  3. You should not eat spicy and solid foods. Dishes should be soft, pureed, or liquid and warm. In the first few days, you need to limit the load on the surgical site.
  4. Do not use blood thinners.
  5. Eliminate alcohol, smoking, which contribute to a decrease in the speed, overgrowth of gum tissue.
  6. Use special rinses and toothpastes.

When taking a horizontal position for sleeping or resting during the day, you should put a high pillow under your head, so that the head is higher in relation to the whole body, thus the swelling due to outflow will disappear faster blood.

To make the swelling go away faster, you need:

  • be more upright;
  • drink clean warm water;
  • often apply ice and compresses;
  • monitor blood pressure so that it does not rise;
  • rinse the mouth after eating with antiseptic solutions.

On the recommendation of the attending physician, you can take an antibiotic or other drugs that will help reduce swelling and pain: Flemoklav, Tantum Verde, Nurofen, Erius, Metrogyl Denta. Decoctions and compresses from chamomile, calendula, string, sage, sea buckthorn, rosehip, oak bark help well.

Rinsing can be done with Furacilina 1 tab. in a glass of warm, boiled water or 1 tsp. salt and 3 drops of iodine.

Application is assigned antiseptic and healing agents: Bio3 Care Foam, 10% Betadine solution, 0.5% solution Chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, Miramistin.

In the postoperative period, one should refrain from flights, physical exercises associated with lifting up or blood flow to the head: pull-ups, swinging the press. You should also avoid drinking carbonated drinks, coffee, strong tea, alcohol. It is strictly forbidden to visit the sauna, bath or swim in hot water, which can increase blood pressure and blood flow.

In the first days after implantation, several important rules should be followed:

  1. Consume more liquid in the form of herbal, purified water.
  2. Follow the rules oral hygiene, brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush 2-3 times a day and rinse after each meal. Apply not only special toothpastes and rinses, foams, but also irrigatorsthat effectively cleanse the teeth of food.

How to identify a complication

Complicated edema can grow not only along the gums. The cheek or half of the face may swell, there may be a skewed facial nerve, bleeding or abscess, numbness lips, gums.

A doctor should be consulted if:

  • if there is an increase in puffiness after 3-5 days;
  • if there is a distortion of the facial nerve from the side of the implanted pin;
  • an increase in body temperature, subfebrile temperature is kept;
  • pain in the area of operation does not subside, but increases;
  • bruising, blueness, purulent discharge around the prosthesis appear;
  • the seams have parted;
  • a hematoma appeared;
  • damage to the implant.

Severe edema after dental implantation can occur due to:

  • lack of oral hygiene;
  • eating solid food;
  • improper preparation or operation performed;
  • in cases of rejection or allergy to the implant material;
  • if a nerve or blood vessel is damaged during surgery;
  • use of drugs that increase blood pressure.

Severe edema occurs due to the abundant flow of lymph and blood into the operation area or infection of the gum tissue with pathogenic bacteria or viruses.

If after 10 days the swelling does not disappear or during this period there are side effects, then you should consult the doctor who performed the operation, or any dentist.

At home, with severe edema, it is important every 30 minutes. apply a cold compress and rinse with an antiseptic, drink an anesthetic. After that, you should consult a doctor to avoid complications or rejection of the installed pin.

Failure to see a doctor in case of severe persistent edema may result in implant rejection, peri-implantitis (atrophy of bone tissue with a strong inflammatory process), the formation of a hematoma. Lack of treatment for postoperative complications leads to serious consequences that can lead to diseases of the jaw, repeated operations to augment bone tissue and install new implants. As a result, this will lead to a loss of time and money.

In most cases, operations are successful, the main thing is to choose the right clinic, an experienced dentist, high-quality material for implantation and go through all the examinations before it.
