When the creative impulse comes suddenly and wants to try new drawing techniques, optical illusions come to the rescue. The ability to draw optical illusions and 3D drawings very well develops the imagination and the ability to think abstractly.
In this article we will tell you how to draw a few optical illusions and 3D drawings from the simplest versions to more complex ones.
How to draw optical illusions - pencil illusion on pencil on paper step by step?
Let's start with a fairly simple optical illusion - the heart.
- First outline the outline of the heart. We draw a straight line in the middle of the vertical line of symmetry. Since the heart will have three visible faces, we will need two more vertical lines at a distance of 0.5 cm along the sides of the line of symmetry.
- Now repeat the picture in the photo below. We retreat along the left line from above 1 cm and lead the arc to the right until it intersects with the contour.
- From the rightmost line, parallel to the previous arc, draw another arc and terminate it on the extreme left symmetry axis below.
- Two more arcs are completed as shown in the picture.
- On the left side, it is necessary to repeat the drawing of the right part, only in the mirror image.
- Do this as shown in the picture.
- The base is ready. Now you need to remove all unnecessary lines of construction, make the contours more clear, and the transitions are soft. Each face should have one clear line.
- Take a soft pencil and begin to traverse the picture. We do this as shown in the photo.
Warning! The pencil should be soft( at least 5M) and sharp, so that the line is neat.
- So, all the lines are outlined. Contour lines external and internal must be the thickest. The lines inside( the face) are thinner.
- We start hatching from the darkest places. The shadow will be under the arc on the right side.
- We start from the upper corner and go down, gradually reducing the force of pressing on the pencil to get a gradient.
- This is how the gradient( transition) looks like, which should work for you.
- We create such transitions wherever there are sharp corners. Our task is to give the image a volume and realism.
- Add some horizontal strokes in the shadow areas to make the drawing more believable. Optical illusion is ready!

Now we will tell you how to draw a non-existent 3D triangle correctly. To do this is also quite simple.
We prepare accessories:
- several pencils of different hardness from hard to very soft
- sheet of thick paper for drawing
- ruler
- eraser
- Draw an equilateral triangle. It is impossible to make an equilateral one - stop on an isosceles one.
- Inside this triangle we draw three lines parallel to its sides. The distance between parallel lines should be 0.5 cm, not more. We have a big triangle and a small triangle in the big one.
- Inside the small triangle, we need to make an even smaller triangle. To do this, refer to Step 3.
- When we first drew the inner triangle( now it's middle), some lines intersect in the corners of the big triangle. Now these lines must be connected to each other as shown in the photo.
- Circle everything exactly as shown in the photo. We do not circle just the angles of a large triangle and some lines of internal constructions.
- We take an eraser and erase all unnecessary lines to us. The picture looks laconic and very neat.
- With a soft pencil, the three corners between the small and medium triangle, as shown in the picture, draw shadows.
- The darkest places are at the intersection of lines. The farther away from them, the weaker the click on the pencil should be.
- Remove all excess stains and stains from the pencil.
- Drawing "Inexistent triangle" is ready!

3D drawings with our own hands - a visual illusion for beginners with explanations
The ability to draw optical illusions is interesting, useful and exciting. But the ability to draw 3D drawings opens up new boundaries for you! How to turn a two-dimensional drawing into a 3D one read on in our article!
One of the simplest 3D drawings is the ladder. Its something we will learn to draw.
We will need:
- thick paper
- pencil
- eraser.
- We fold the paper in half from the short side.
- Draw one strip from the center to the edge, then on the other side draw a symmetric to it.
- We repeat below.
- We begin to draw horizontal steps on one of the stairs.
- Finish with one ladder and move to the next.
- Draw as many steps as on the first staircase.
- We do not forget that both ladders are completely symmetrical with respect to each other.
- Take the ruler and, as shown in the picture, draw a shadow under the stairs. Without this shadow, the pattern will lose its volume and realism.
- Add the drawing along the fold line, which was done in Step 1. We have got a great 3d ladder, congratulations!

Next we present to your attention a 3D butterfly pattern, made on graduated millimeter paper with colored pencils. If you do not have such paper, then you can make it yourself by plotting squares of 1x1 cm on an ordinary sheet.
- Prepare the paper.
- Draw the contours of the butterfly's body and wings. Use the sample below, or come up with your model.
- Inside the wings of the butterfly, create a pattern. It can be completely different.
- Complete the pattern with additional elements.
- This step can be omitted.
- Take the colored pencils, in our case it's red, yellow, black and brown, and add the colors to the work.
- The pattern we made is colored, and the black pencil is now needed to paint everything inside the butterfly's wings, except for the pattern.
- Make the hatching more dense so that there are no gaps. But do not overdo it.
- With the minimum pressure on the black pencil, make a shadow under the butterfly.
- Step 8
- Make the shadow darker. The darkest place is exactly under the butterfly. To the edges of the shadow becomes light.
- Cut out the butterfly as shown.
- In the end, you will get such a picture! The work is ready!
